Elder Abuse Statistics


The Adult Protective Services unit maintains statistics on reports of abuse in Cuyahoga County, and partners with regional and state-wide organizations to report progress, identify needs, and advocate on behalf of older adults and adults with disabilities. Below are some statistics from the National Council on Aging:
  • 1 in 10 Americans aged 60 and over have been abused
  • Estimates say as many as 5 million Americans have been abused
  • 1 in 14 cases of elder abuse are reported to authorities
  • Sixty-percent of abusers are adult children or spouses
  • Estimates of elder financial abuse and fraud costs to older Americans range from $2.9 billion to $36.5 billion annually
